Looking ahead to the future in NWE

“It’s been stimulating to see ourselves working collaboratively and become a global team”

I am excited and proud to be stepping into the role of North West Europe (NWE) Lead. We have established a strong foundation and I am committed to building on our already considerable successes while working together to navigate the challenges ahead.

Before I set out where I see our priorities moving forward, it’s worth reflecting on our journey to this point. We have made considerable progress since acquiring the UK pipeline network in 2015.

In that time we have brought our entire operations and maintenance functions in-house, taken over management of our Walton and Bramhall terminals which were previously leased to third parties, renegotiated all major contracts, and grown and diversified our business with the acquisition and integration of Inter Terminals – adding 15 terminals and creating the NWE region with teams across the UK, Ireland, Germany and the Netherlands.

All of this has been achieved in just nine years – a tremendous feat that demonstrates our capability and forward-thinking approach. But what’s next?

Health and safety remains our top priority when it comes to our people and the work that we do, and it’s imperative that we focus on improving both personal and process safety. We’re also invested in sustainability and will be working to deliver on our environmental commitment to becoming a zero-emissions business by 2040.

Improving our existing business is a key pillar of our strategic plan. We’ll continue to develop our customer offer and make sure we provide a premium service, listening and reacting to customer needs and adding new products and services – an example being the recently constructed liquified propane gas storage facility at Seal Sands in the UK.

How we diversify our business will be crucial in our ability to support the energy transition. Our Clean Energies team has made some fantastic progress, pushing ahead with innovative projects such as the Tees Valley Hydrogen plant at Riverside, the liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) trial at Immingham, and the blending, storage and transportation of sustainable fuels, including SAF – the only feasible means of decarbonising the aviation sector. We are set up to thrive as we develop these projects and assess the potential for more clean energy initiatives to come.

Growth depends on providing a first-class service as safely, reliably and efficiently as we possibly can. Targeting operational excellence and a culture of continuous improvement will help us remain at the forefront of our industry, and we’ll be working to standardise and optimise our operational processes while embracing technology across all areas of the business.

Finally, we are a people company. Our aim is to attract and retain the best talent, and make good on our pledge to champion learning and development. Providing clear career pathways and fostering an environment where everyone feels valued, included, and has access to equal opportunities are just a few steps we must take to support and deliver for our people.

None of the achievements I laid out earlier would have been possible without the unique pool of talent we have here. It has been spiriting to see us working more collaboratively and becoming a truly global team, and I’m very much looking forward to what we will achieve together in the coming months and years – there are certainly exciting times ahead.

Thank you all for your continued dedication and support.

About us

WE MOVE ON

Expanding our Presence in Gijón with a New Bulk Liquid Terminal

Our company won the contract to manage a bulk liquid storage facility in Gijón for the next 15 years, and will invest three million euros in its modernization.

The Port Authority of Gijón (Asturias) awarded Exolum the management of the bulk liquid storage terminal located on the Osa quay at the port of Gijón.

The term of the contract is 15 years, during which we’ll invest three million euros to allow us to connect the new terminal to the current Exolum facility for optimal integrated management, and to modernize the existing infrastructures to adapt them and offer a wider range of logistics services.

These services include all those required for decarbonization and the energy transition. The new facilities will ease broader and faster deployment of biofuels.

Jorge Guillén, Spain Region Lead, assessed this operation saying, “We see the port of Gijón as a great opportunity to develop a larger volume of logistics operations, as well as drive the diversification of our business by expanding our services to new energy vectors which are relevant to modernization, competitiveness and the sustainability of Asturian industry.”

Exolum – A Reference Logistics Partner

This contract is a step forward towards achieving our aspiration of becoming a reference logistics partner for industrial activities in Asturias, both as concerns  new green fuel production plants, as well as other industries with bulk logistics needs. The investments planned include projects to reduce the carbon footprint.

Likewise, the improvements and adaptation of the facilities will make it possible to offer logistics services to a larger number of customers, not only associated with the energy or chemicals market, but also other bulk products and energy vectors.

“At Exolum, we’re committed to investing in Spain, particularly in the development of logistics investments at ports that support the energy transition,” concluded Jorge Guillén.

“The port of Gijón is a great opportunity to expand our services to new energy vectors and drive the competitiveness of Asturian industry”

Jorge Guillén

Spain Region Lead

WHAT’S THE TERMINAL LIKE?

The facility has a capacity of 67,000 m3 distributed among 12 tanks and a service station, in addition to offering plenty of interconnection options with ships, lorries and, eventually trains.

Our new facility will be integrated with the infrastructures we already have at this port and with the extensive network we have throughout Spain.

A STRATEGIC ENCLAVE IN ASTURIAS

The port of Gijón is the ideal enclave for the development of logistics operations due to the quantity and quality of its connections to the Asturian industrial hubs. This opens Exolum up to the possibility of investing in a larger number of tanks to transport and store new energy vectors such as biofuels, ecofuels, hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, coal, etc.

The project will facilitate the energy transition in the area, boost Asturias’ role as a hub for the new energy vectors and contribute to competitiveness in the Asturian industry and economy, as well as the growth of all activity surrounding the port of Gijón.

WHO WE ARE

We’re building a new fuel supply terminal at the Lanzarote airport

Growing on the Canary Islands! We invested 12 million euros in the new airport facility on Lanzarote, which we also operate.

We strengthened our presence on the Canary Islands with the construction of a new aviation fuel storage facility at the Lanzarote airport, the second we’re operating in the archipelago, following the one in Southern Tenerife. The new infrastructures will allow us to offer better service to the different airport operators with the highest level of efficiency.

The facility will be equipped with a minimum capacity of 6,000 m3, a new loading arm for refuelling units and energy efficiency enhancements. We’ll also be handling operations and maintenance at the fuel storage facility.

The project includes dismantling the current facility and the existing pipeline. Once the work is finished, which is expected to take three years, we’ll be responsible for the infrastructure for the following 12 years.

As part of this integrated renovation, we’ll build new access roads and parking areas for into-plane fuelling equipment and make energy efficiency improvements. Congratulations to all of you who have made this new milestone possible!

The facility will be equipped with a minimum capacity of 6,000 m3, a new loading arm for refuelling units and energy efficiency enhancements

We’re investing 20 million euros in building a new biofuel storage plant at the port of Bilbao

We’re expanding our facilities in the Basque Country with the construction of a new biofuel storage plant and another for bulk liquids at the port of Bilbao on land adjacent to our facility in Zierbena. The new plant will be operating by 2027.

The first phase of the project is set to begin in 2025. The infrastructure will house the reception, storage, blending and dispatch of biofuels as well as alternative fuels and oils. It will have infrastructures linking to the port of Bilbao and will facilitate ship entry and exit operations, as well as connections to our company’s other terminals.

Jorge Guillén, Spain Region Lead, explained that this is “an important step in our strategy of investing in Spain to develop and operate the necessary logistics infrastructures for the new sustainable fuels”.

cibeles-re, an all-new Exolum Group company

The new captive reinsurance company, which will allow us to better finance any possible risks, has been operative since 1st January.  We’re adding value to our Group!

We’re taking another step forward with the creation of cibeles-re. This new company is a captive reinsurer: a company created by a business in order to manage the group’s and its subsidiaries’ risks in a more flexible and affordable way.

This type of company is the most effective tool for financing our risks and adapting to the hardening market in the traditional insurance sector which is experiencing restricted covers and increasing premiums.  It will also help us gradually achieve independence.

Another advantage is that it facilitates cover for specific risks linked to the technological innovations we’re adopting as part of our diversification strategy for the energy transition.

Congratulations to the Risk and Insurance team for this progress!

We’ve endorsed the Turin Joint Statement on Sustainable Biofuels

In line with our strategic goal of driving the energy transition, we’ve endorsed the Turin Joint Statement on Sustainable Biofuels through ATliq, the Liquid Terminals Association. This document defends the transition toward biofuels and their associated value chains as an essential part of decarbonizing transport, and promoting environmental sustainability and innovation.

The statement was presented on 29th April in Turin with the support of the G7 countries (France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada and the United States) and more than 75 industrial leaders and organizations. The signatories undertook the commitment of meeting ambitious greenhouse gas emission reduction targets in key sectors such as aviation, maritime navigation and road transport. We’ve ratified our commitment to sustainability!

Green hydrogen is key to decarbonizing society

We analysed green hydrogen technologies and their potential for contributing to sustainable mobility during a seminar organized along with Funseam at our headquarters.

The four roundtables at the Exolum and Environmental Energy Sustainability Foundation (Funseam) seminar gathered energy sector leaders and experts who, among other topics, discussed the deployment of green hydrogen in Spain and how it’s helping to decarbonize transport.

Our president, Rosa García, highlighted the relevance of hydrogen as a solution for decarbonizing sectors that are difficult to electrify, such as the thermal process intensification and heavy mobility. Rosa mentioned there are still challenges ahead, such as the regulatory and tax framework, as well as the creation of new demand and greater technological development.

On the other hand, Joan Batalla, Managing Director of Funseam, underlined the strategic importance of hydrogen: driving profitable and efficient decarbonization around the world will allow countries to achieve their climate goals, foster economic growth and generate long-lasting jobs.

PARTICIPATING

Jorge Lanza defends the role of biofuels

Our CEO participated in the fourth edition of the business forum Wake Up, Spain!, organized by the newspaper El Español. Jorge Lanza emphasized the key role of alternative fuels and combustion engine
efficiency in the energy transition process.

In view of the challenges of decarbonization in the transport sector, Jorge spoke of the strategic role of ecofuels, which will make it possible to reduce CO2 emissions using today’s infrastructures and vehicles: “Transport is being decarbonized, but not through electrification, but rather through more efficient engines and cleaner fuels which encourage a circular economy.”

“Last year we set up the first and, for now, the only hydrogen refuelling station in the Autonomous Region of Madrid. Our vocation is to provide hydrogen storage and transport services,” explained Jorge, who also emphasized the possibilities of ammonia: “We want to be relevant in this transition, by developing and operating the infrastructures that will be required by these new energy solutions.”

We participated in ACI Airport Day 2024 in Ecuador

Exolum was one of the companies participating in ACI Airport Day 2024, an event in Cuenca (Ecuador) that brought together international experts in aviation and representatives from Latin American airports in order to promote an exchange of knowledge and experiences in the aeronautics industry.

Our company, led by Bernardo Santos, head of the Guayaquil airport facility, had an informational stand disseminating information on our activities.

Headquartered in Montreal, Airports Council International (ACI) promotes and fosters excellence in airport management and operations.

Board safety visit to Son Banya

As part of its half-yearly meeting, the Exolum Board of Directors visited our facility in Son Banya (Palma de Mallorca) to verify the safety measures in place.

The Board was quite impressed with the level of dedication shown by each member of the plant staff towards their work, particularly with regard to safety.  They also relayed their concern for the safety of all people, as well as the facilities and the environment.

We’d like to thank the Son Banya team for their warm welcome and constant commitment to our company’s primary value.  Thank you very much!

Forum 2024: Growing together!

Our annual convention for Spain Region managers reaffirmed what unites us and what moves us: getting our company to grow.

Forum 2024, recently held in Toledo, was all about sharing good times and confirming how everyone’s contributions are what keep us growing together and developing new business.

Over a day and a half, we were able to better understand the work done by EXCO and LT, the day-to-day at our facilities and the role our COEs. There was talk of how our Aviation business is evolving, and how we’re making progress towards the energy transition. There was also some time to reflect upon the diversity within our company. Plus, we enjoyed the enriching participation of speakers from AENA (the Spanish Airport Authority) and Repsol.

Our Forum is always full of surprises, and this year, we replicated an original late night television studio featuring Mavi de Lamor, our Communication Manager, transmitting her friendliness and energy, as well as the band Charly and the Coconuts.

Through a fun batucada, we realized how important it is to work in a coordinated manner and as a team, as set out by the Sherpa programme. And we laughed and laughed with stand-up comedian Leo Harlem. The icing on the cake was a visit to the theme park Puy du Fou to attend the nighttime show El sueño de Toledo.

A Forum to move together!

OUR EXPERT

Compliance: committed to ethics and transparency

Diego Pérez
Global Compliance & Data Protection Lead

More and more will be heard about Compliance as it’s a concept that’s very much related to business ethics. It may seem complicated, but our expert Diego Pérez is going to explain what it’s all about and why it’s so important at Exolum.

Diego Pérez  is our Global Compliance & Data Protection Lead. With 10 years of experience, he’s spent the majority of his career at law firms and working for IBEX 35 companies. By joining Exolum a year and a half ago, he helped us reinforce our Compliance department.

What is Compliance?

“Compliance is a set of practices, rules and processes an organization implements to make sure its activities are undertaken in accordance with the laws, regulations, policies and ethics standards applicable to the particular sector and context,” says Diego. But “it’s not just about complying with the law or internal policies, but rather instilling values such as ethics, transparency and good corporate governance.”

That’s why, as a result of Exolum’s internationalization process and faced with an ever more complex regulatory system, the need arose to update and approve new compliance policies.  “These new policies are aligned with the company’s aims, mission and values, and have helped us create an atmosphere of trust and responsibility. A place where all employees feel empowered to work ethically and responsibly,” says Diego.

Compliance Policies

  • The Updated Code of Conduct and Compliance Policy. It establishes the ethical principles and rules of behaviour all of us who are a part of Exolum must follow. “By abiding by the Code of Conduct, we’re also strengthening the trust, reputation and credibility of our company,” says our expert.

  • The Policy and Procedure for Managing Conflicts of Interest. It provides the guidelines necessary to prevent and manage conflicts of interest that may arise as a result of our activities.

  • The Anti-Corruption and Anti-Bribery Policy. It offers information to avoid bribery and any other type of conduct that may be considered corrupt.

  • The Policy and Procedure for the Use of the Code of Conduct Mailbox. This mailbox allows people at Exolum to report any behaviour or situation they believe may be inappropriate or breach our internal policies, with absolute confidentiality and without any fear of retaliation. As Diego underlines, “It’s essential to identify and correct any irregularities quickly and effectively.”

Find our Ethics and Compliance policies here

What the new policies mean for us

“Exolum employees must know and understand these new policies. Only then will we know how to work in a way that prevents any violations,” Diego reminds us. And in order for it to be easier to internalize them, all the documentation is available under the Ethics and Integrity section of the intranet. We’re also launching periodic informational pills and finalizing a training plan.

“It’s not just about complying with the law or internal policies, but rather instilling values such as ethics, transparency and good corporate governance”

What excites us

EXOLUM-LIVE

We’re starting up the first project in the world involving bulk LOHC transport and storage

We’re taking a step forward in leading the logistics for new sustainable energy vectors. We’re developing a pioneer project to transport and store liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) through our infrastructure network in Immingham, United Kingdom.  Progress is underway!

“This project is an example of Exolum’s potential for innovatively using its infrastructures”

Daniel Lee

Hydrogen Project Development

We’re absolutely thrilled to share this milestone in our decarbonization and diversification strategy. Exolum will be the first company in the world to physically transport and store hydrogen on a commercial scale with liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC). And we’ll do so using our existing pipeline and storage tank infrastructure. Tests will be performed to confirm compatibility.

Our facilities in Immingham, the United Kingdom, will be the scene for this innovative pilot project for which we’ve received support from the British government with public funding worth 505,000 pounds (593,000 euros) through Innovate UK. And we’re not alone. Axiom, a British multidisciplinary engineering firm, will be responsible for designing and doing all the laboratory testing.

Daniel Lee, Hydrogen Project Development in the Exolum Clean Energies unit, explained that “this initiative is an example of the immense potential we have for innovatively using our infrastructures, which can store and distribute all sorts of liquid products.”

The aim of this trial effort, which we expect to complete by the end of the year, is to store and transport 400 m3 of LOHC with some 20 tonnes of hydrogen (enough to drive a hydrogen-powered car 2 million kilometres) between the Immingham East and Immingham West facilities via a 1.5 kilometre long pipeline. Throughout this process, we’ll perform laboratory tests to confirm the quality of the LOHCs can be maintained.

Testing to open doors

Our infrastructures can store and distribute a number of different liquid products meaning this new offer can be scaled and adapted to support the increase in market demand.

What’s more, the feasibility of this project will support the first hydrogen programmes in the United Kingdom so the crucial service of large-scale hydrogen storage and distribution may be available before other alternative options.

In short, as mentioned by Daniel Lee, “this pilot project will allow us to obtain valuable information and knowledge. It will a huge step in developing and researching new storage and distribution technologies for the new energy vectors, as well as a natural extension of our service offering”.

What are LOHCs?

Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) are organic compounds capable of absorbing and releasing hydrogen through chemical reactions. This means they can be used to store and transport hydrogen.

Previous projects have technically proven the processes for accepting and releasing hydrogen from LOHCs. What’s not yet been proven is whether it can be transported and stored in re-used already-existing oil infrastructures. This is our goal now.

MEETING...

“Good governance of data opens up opportunities”

Starting in January of this year, Daniel Casas took on the challenge of driving digitalization at Exolum, using data as the main resource. In this interview, we welcome him to the company as we find out more about him and his work.

Daniel spent his childhood and adolescence in Rio de Janeiro. He returned to Spain at the age of 17 to study Industrial Engineering. He’s been learning ever since, something that he’s passionate about.  “I’m doing two masters degrees right now, one in Data in addition to an MBA,” he explains. After working in nuclear energy for 10 years, he switched sectors upon joining CLH, the former name for Exolum. He admits to being “a bit of a tech geek” and although he no longer plays football like he once did, he enjoys watching Real Madrid win European cups.  “I’m happily married and have a son who’s as much or even more of a Real Madrid fan as I am,” he tells us. And that’s our Global Data Lead.

DANIEL CASAS

Global Data Lead

How long have you been working at Exolum? What was it like for you in the beginning?

I was hired in April 2019. It was complicated at first. I joined a highly consolidated team, in a newly-created position and had to adapt to a change of industry because I had come from nuclear energy.  I’ve never felt so much like an ‘outsider’! The company has made great efforts to enhance the onboarding experience for new hires. I’d highlight its Welcome Days, as they’re a real success!

What’s your current job?

My current role is as the Global Data Lead. It’s a challenge that involves being the driving force behind the company’s digitalization using data as the main resource. And it’s not a job you can do alone. I’m supported by the Systems team and also work with the Transformation team, as there’s a major cultural change component, in addition to the Digitalization department as the starting point for the company’s digital transformation.

What are your main duties?

Since it’s a newly-created job, my duties will develop and be more obvious as we go about implementing the strategy. But I can tell you about our plans for this year.

And what would those plans be?

The first is to precisely define the data strategy at Exolum, something we’ve already done and presented to the EXCO, who has approved it. After that, working to materialize the plan beginning with defining the data governance model, implementing a technology platform that facilitates the use thereof by all the different business areas and, finally, creating an integrated data owners team, people within the organization who can help deploy the data strategy from their own areas.

What are the steps to be taken now?

For now, we have the strategy and roadmap, as well as a draft governance model. We’re in the middle of choosing a data platform with support from an external team and hope to have a decision on the best choice before the end of the year. At the same time, we’re working with the People team to better define the roles that will be a fundamental part of the strategy deployment.  It’s been anything but a gentle landing!

What is data governance and why is it important for Exolum?

The idea of ‘data governance’ is rather abstract. To sum it up, it answers questions such as: Where can I find the data I need to make a decision?  Who can give me the data?  Who can I share them with?  What do all the data mean for our business?  Where should the focus be and which use cases should be prioritized as a company?

What would happen without a good governance model?

The risks of a data leak would increase, opportunities would be lost and rules, standards and laws could be breached. ‘Data governance’ prevents the temptation to base decisions on intuition instead of drawing conclusions based on reliable and contrasted information.

HOW TO BE A DATA CITIZEN

A data citizen is someone with basic knowledge of how data are collected, handled, analysed and used, who may actively participate in the company’s data culture. “Being a data citizen means having the skills and attitude required to effectively contribute in a data-based environment. All of us can be data citizens.  You just have to have an interest in learning and relying on support from the Data department.”

SCIENCE FICTION, SERIES AND FAMILY GETAWAYS

During the little bit of free time he has, Daniel likes to read –“I’m a fan of science fiction and business topics”– and watch series. “But what I love the most is spending time with my family even though it happens less than I’d like,” he admits. At weekends, they usually get away to some mountain village to take walks and disconnect. They enjoy places near Madrid like El Escorial, La Granja, Segovia and Ávila.

Sherpa, leadership to get to the top

The new phase we’re in requires leaders who can guide their teams’ talent in a more assertive and inclusive way.  Find out about the Sherpa Exolum programme!

The Sherpas help conquer the highest of summits. At Exolum, they’re the motivation behind the name for our new leadership development programme because they symbolize inspiration, experience and teamwork.

In collaboration with Smart Culture, the Sherpa Exolum programme aims to equip our leaders with the skills needed to boost their teams’ talent and create atmospheres of trust, autonomy and inclusion where everyone can contribute.

175 professionals from Exolum are participating in this nearly one-year ‘expedition’ during which they must reach the top of three peaks.  Let the climbing begin!

Surmounting 3 peaks

  • Empower Self (K2)
Starting off with self-discovery, personal development and skills enhancement as leaders, this peak develops depth in leadership with conviction and passion.

  • Empower Exolum (Makalu)
Our leaders will venture into issues that are important to Exolum: how some of our processes work, trends, digitalization and safety leadership.

  • Empower Others (Everest)
The highest peak is team management through collaboration and commitment, acting as sources of inspiration, boosting other peoples’ skills, spreading a willingness to learn and looking after everyone’s safety and health.

Celebrating our first Datathon!: we’re driving innovation to lead the future

More than 50 people from different areas at Exolum gathered for two days to work on our data strategy and define use cases of great value to our company.  We’re moving forward by collaborating!

The Minsait consulting firm premises hosted the first Exolum Datathon. Participating were 51 people from different areas of the company: People, Clean Energies, Finance, Maintenance, Operations HUB Digital, IT, OT, HSSE, Global Assets, Compliance and Aviation. All of them worked collaboratively to improve our services with data.

The Datathon generated proposed solutions to problems that arise in the day-to-day of the teams participating, which were resolved by combining creativity, technology, analytics… and a whole lot of data!

The best ideas were the projects ‘Xmart Bid’, aimed at facilitating the development of sales opportunities, and ‘Cristal Tank’, to stimulate optimal management of the Exolum asset portfolio. The most innovative proposal award went to ‘Happiness Index’, which was created based on everyday data. Congratulations to all those who participated!

What is a Datathon?

It’s a meeting of experts who work in teams for a few hours or a few days to come up with a solution to a social, business or technology problem. It differs from a Hackathon, the aim of which is also to find creative and innovative solutions, as the problems raised in a Datathon are related to the analysis, management or processing of large volumes of data.

‘Fake news’: how to recognize and defend yourself from misinformation

History has always been full of hoaxes, such as when people once said Cleopatra was a trickster and whimsical. In our digital society, disinformation spreads at a never-before-seen speed and can have serious consequences.  Learn to identify fake news!

Take news is really nothing new, but social media now makes it all viral in just a few seconds. Presented as real news, it’s actually just made-up or deceitful information.

It usually appeals to people’s emotions in order to grab their attention and increase traffic for ideological or economic reasons (often with the intent to commit fraud).

Hoaxes damage the reputation of people, companies and institutions, and harm our understanding of issues that affect politics, society, health and work.

We must develop critical thinking because disinformation is a broad concept that’s not always that easy to identify, but really easy to spread. According to a study by the Complutense University in Madrid, 90% of all Spaniards have shared fake news at some time.

Disinformation goes beyond fabricating a lie

  • Facts are hidden.
  • Real content is inserted into false framework.
  • Real content is altered to look different.

How to identify fake news

  • Read the full publication. Headlines don’t always match the content of the information.
  • Verify the means of communication. Is it known to you? Is it reliable? Does the URL seem suspicious?
  • Look into the sources and author. Are they identified? Are there more sources that support the story? Is the author a real person?  Has the author published other articles or posts?
  • Check the context. Spreading old news is the same as disinformation, as are old images out of context.
  • Take a look at ‘fact checking’ sites. Reliable media outlets exist that detect fake news.
  • Make sure it’s not a joke. Some posts and websites are satirical or meant to be funny: check the content.
  • Think before sharing. Have you checked to be sure the information is reliable? Are you contributing anything by sharing it? Think before you click!

“Leaders must develop ecosystems of innovation and continuous learning”

SUSANA GÓMEZ FORONDA,
CO-FOUNDER AND CEO OF SMART CULTURE

Companies are facing major changes in the way they make decisions and work. In a constantly changing environment, they need leaders who can guide their teams’ talent. This valuable expert sat down to talk to us about it.  Her consulting firm has been collaborating with Exolum on the Sherpa programme so we can get to the top.

Susana Gómez is a renowned international expert on culture, leadership and talent. Her solid, extensive experience of more than 20 years as a business owner, executive and director for multinational companies of the likes of PwC, Avon Cosmetics and Kellog’s positions her as a reference on human capital, organizational transformation and the development of teams and leaders for sustainable high performance. In 2015, she founded Smart Culture, a “boutique” consulting firm that advises companies of renowned prestige around the world on cultural transformation and leadership development processes. Susana sat down to talk to us about this new leadership and the Sherpa programme, which we’re implementing at Exolum.

What are the most immediate challenges for today’s leaders?

We’re living in an era of accelerated disruption. All companies are facing major challenges linked to technology, sociology and geopolitics. The borders of all sectors have become permeable. Data, algorithms and artificial intelligence are changing the way we project, decide and work. All of this is happening at the same time and companies are trying to respond by redefining their business models, redesigning their organizations and digitizing their work model.

In this context, what is the greatest challenge for management?

A change of this magnitude involves a real cognitive and emotional load. The biggest thing is getting their organizations or teams to develop the capabilities to effectively overcome the challenges that arise in such a complex and changing environment. Leaders must relate with others differently with all the uncertainty, develop ecosystems of innovation and ongoing learning and do all the basics super well: align people with a shared purpose and vision with clear priorities, roles and responsibilities.

What should leaders do to integrate sensitivities and different cultures within multinational companies like Exolum?

Including diversity is one of the organizational competencies that has proven to be most effective in areas such as innovation, risk management and effective decision making.

Fostering an inclusive leadership style gets the people within the organization to understand the importance of focusing on leading teams and projects in such way.

What sorts of characteristics must an inclusive leader have?

There are many models that study the characteristics of inclusive leaders. I particularly like the EACH Model developed by Catalyst: Empowerment, Accountability, Courage, Humility. It integrates really well four characteristics for building highly safe psychological environments that enable people to maximize their contributions to companies and ensure individual talent transforms into collective talent.

What are the greatest strengths being developed by Sherpa leaders?

Sherpa is designed to maximize the leadership potential of all participants. All of the programmes comprising it have one common denominator: self-leadership and team empowerment. The groups participating in the programme have different challenges based on the impact of their role at Exolum.

Is this sort of programme common within organizations or is there something that makes it special?

What makes Sherpa a singular initiative is ambition, the innovative design and depth of the content as well as how the programme is run. The content is based on methods and tools of high statistical validity which have proven effective in developing leadership and high-performing teams, which become international references.

We’ve combined the best in the world to help Exolum increase the effectiveness of its leadership individually and collectively. We’re operating 14 leadership programmes for the three most senior-level groups within the organization at the same time, in both Spanish and English, with an average duration of 50 hours in a synchronous format.

THE FOUR LEADER “SUPERPOWERS”

Leadership is a reality transformation process that requires certain capabilities to shape it. To do so, there are four “superpowers” all leaders must develop.

  1. Speed: A leader must have the capacity to quickly analyse a situation and make decisions in real time getting all the right people involved. Likewise, a leader must foster efficiency in decision making.
  2. Technology: All executives must be up-to-date in the present and future of technology, the application thereof to their industry/job and promote effective implementation thereof throughout the company.

  3. Talentism: Organizations are people and you have to attract and make your talent loyal. This means prioritizing culture and talent-related initiatives, and equipping them with the right people and resources to make an impact.

  4. Exemplary Leadership: All leaders must be references for the leadership style the organization wishes to promote. Human beings learn through modelling and organizations generate credibility when they do

Safety and health

Safety

Safety is always first

During Workplace Safety and Health week, we celebrated our Safety Day 2024 to share tips related to our main value: Safety.

To learn more, we organized a global webinar on how to prevent human errors and correct risk situations with Jesús Manso, Global HSSEQ Lead, and Hugo Tovar, Director of Consulting and Preventive Culture at the company PreventControl, which specializes in safety.

Afterwards, we encouraged our work centres to complete an online game to revise what they’d learnt and suggest ideas for improvement.  There was a prize for the best two proposals!  Congratulations!

Spain Region winners: Burgos Facility

The team at this facility and the head of the plant, Ricardo González, recommended taking 5 minutes at the start of each workday to talk about the human factors that can have an impact on the day’s work, such as a lack of communication, too much confidence or distractions, in order to be more on top of things and avoid errors. They also suggested reinforcing attention on safety rounds and rewarding the most proactive plant to this end. The prize was a lunch for the entire team.

NWE Winners :  Backford Terminal

Congratulations to the Backford terminal for winning the Safety Day suggestion scheme in NWE. The suggestion was to create a ‘Clean Dozen’ list of behaviours we want to see to avoid the types of human error identified and discussed in the Dirty Dozen. All the suggestions that were sent in are being reviewed as part of our human factors improvement work and we hope to implement many others but congratulations and well done to the Backford team, to Peter Robson who completed the game and sent the team suggestion in and Nigel Chapman who is the Terminal Manager and led the session. They received a large hamper of goodies to share amongst all of the terminal staff as a prize for their suggestion.

Tips that can save lives

Holiday time is here and so is all the travel. We recently celebrated World Road Safety Week and want to share a few recommendations on how to prevent accidents.  Take care and look after others!

  • Always use a safety belt and helmet when on a motorbike or bicycle. Safety belts reduce the risk of death by 60% and helmets prevent 44% of all head injuries.
  • Avoid using devices that can distract you. Don’t use a mobile phone or earphones while driving or walking.
  • Do frequent vehicle maintenance and all technical inspections. Monitor the pressure and conditions of your tyres, measure the oil and water level, and keep headlamps and windows clean.
  • Don’t drive under the effects of any substances that may affect your attention. Some medicines can lower your attention level at the wheel.
  • Pay attention to signals, zebra crossings and traffic lights. As a pedestrian, only cross where allowed.
  • Keep yourself visible if walking or riding a bike at night. Wear light clothing, and use reflective strips or a front torch.

We hosted the Bequinor general assembly and technical conference

Our Madrid headquarters was the site of the Bequinor General Assembly and Technical Conference (National Association for the Standardization of Capital Goods and Industrial Safety), a meeting during which there was debate on safety and sustainability at industrial facilities, and the Guide to Lithium Battery Safety as well as the main advances in hydrogen storage safety were presented.

The Ministry of Industry Assistant Deputy Director of Quality and Industrial Safety, José Luis Álvarez de Samaniego, opened the conference and our colleagues Jesús Manso, Marta Fernández, Juan Jesús Reyes and Ana Otero spoke about our company’s commitment to safety and sustainability.  Thanks to Bequinor for allowing us to host!

WELLNESS TOURISM

HOLIDAYS TO FIND PHYSICAL AND MENTAL BALANCE

The summer is here and so are the holidays!  Have you made plans to go to the beach, mountains or do some cultural tourism? There’s a trend that’s becoming more and more popular, the kind of tourism that improves and balances our lives.  Become a part of it!

For many people, holiday time is about saying ‘goodbye diets and gym’ as it’s the time when you can indulge a bit. The important thing is to enjoy your free time as you wish. But it’s always tempting to talk about trends and wellness tourism is one of them. The World Tourism Organization defines it as “travel mainly associated with the pursuit of physical, mental and spiritual health”.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY AND MIND

Wellness tourism is not health tourism. The latter refers to those who travel to clinics or specialist centres to cure injuries, undergo an operation or get a specific treatment. Wellness is a broader and integrated physical and mental concept which promotes a healthy lifestyle where diet and exercise are important but work is also done for meditation, emotions and techniques to reduce stress.

Throughout the world there are agencies that specialize in this type of tourism and wellness centres offering integrated treatments with a whole range of prices. The best alternative is to custom design your wellness holidays in accordance with your financial possibilities.

THE MOUNTAINS, THE BEST ‘COACH’

In the mountains you can reconnect with yourself, take walks and let the natural environment ‘do its thing’. Even if you’re not an experienced mountaineer, find routes that adapt to your own physical fitness: clean, fresh air regenerates the respiratory system and fills people with energy. Walking through the mountains involves the entire body, benefits your cardiovascular health and is therapy for the mind.

SPIRITUAL RETREATS AT MONASTERIES

If you need meditation, silence and peace, a retreat at a monastery is a way to reconnect with your most spiritual inner self. Some monasteries are real architectural gems in natural settings that have inns where you can stay, as they’re operated as hostels. You can go to others to share prayer time, meditation and a little bit of their monastic life… as long as you abide by their rules.  Just ask!

YOGA: SEEKING CONNECTION

Many people have started doing this thousand-year-old practice which connects the body and mind. Yoga reduces stress and lowers a person’s blood pressure and heart rate, in addition to improving coordination and concentration. Without leaving your own country, you’ll find summer courses where meditation and nature go hand in hand. If you’re looking to travel to the origins, Rishikesh, India in the foothills of the Himalayas is the world capital of yoga.  Ubud, on the island of Bali, is another reference.

THALASSOTHERAPY: HOLIDAYS AT SEA

Ancient Rome put a name to what thousand-year-old cultures already knew: salutem per aquam, health through water—now known as a SPA.  The benefits of water are immense.  Whether at a spa or at a health resort, the medicinal mineral water is swallowed or absorbed by the skin in baths. Not all water has the same properties, so find what’s best for you. Summertime is viewed by many as synonymous to the sea. Wellness tourism offers specific thalassotherapy centres (thalassa means ‘sea’ in Greek) which use the properties of seawater, sludge, algae and plankton.

Treatments aside, something as simple as walking through the sand on a beach will help improve your blood circulation, tone muscles, exfoliate the skin and help you feel relaxed. Finally, seawater improves dermatological and respiratory conditions and, above all, fights stress, fatigue and anxiety.  Nothing but advantages!

We’ve reactivated Women In Movement: Connect with WIM!

Women In Movement (WIM) was started up in 2020, yet the pandemic brought it to a halt. It was time to reactivate this network which facilitates two-way communication between members and the DE&I Committees, and makes it possible to identify the challenges women face at the workplace in order to find solutions and grow as an organization.

To spread awareness for WIM, we organized two digital meetings in Spain Region and in NWE to discuss the importance of building a more committed and inclusive company.

Get to know the WIM advantages

  • Connect with like-minded people. It is a valuable platform for women and men allies to engage in meaningful conversations about shared experiences and aspirations.
  • Boost professional development. Workshops and webinars to equip women with the skills and knowledge they need to advance their careers.
  • Influencing change. WIM contributes to a more inclusive and supportive work environment for everyone at Exolum.

Women’s Day: an inspirational mural

We celebrated International Women’s Day by inviting people at Exolum to send a message of thanks to the women who have made an impact on their lives. The dedications received were used to create a moving mural in homage to their determination, wisdom and enthusiasm.

In Spain Region, we held a webinar to talk about the value female talent brings to organizations. Participating in the event, which was moderated by Cristina Jaraba, Global People Lead, was Carmen Herranz, who is responsible for Inclusion, Diversity and Equity at KPMG. And in NWE,  Mark O’Neill, who is O&M Lead, participated in a UN Global Compact event to analyse the role of male allies in the promotion of gender equality.

Proud to be LGTBI+ allies!

We celebrated International LGTBI+ Pride Day to showcase our support for an open and inclusive society that respects different sexual orientations and gender identities.  We promote equality!

This year we’ve encouraged everyone at Exolum to be an LGTBI+ ally because all of us can help eradicate stereotypes and foster non-discrimination. According to a study by the LGBTI+ Diversity and Inclusion Business Newtork (REDI), an entity we’re a part of, only 4 out of every 10 people dare to ‘come out of the closet’ at work.

Standing out among the initiatives we undertook during Pride Week were the webinars entitled ‘How to Be a (Better) LGTBIQ+ Ally’. In Spain Region, they were organized by Misael Pérez, an expert on LGTBIQ+ inclusion strategies at Airbus, and Loida García, Global Infrastructure Services Lead. Participating in NWE were Matt Foster, Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Ogilvy UK, and Julie Cloutier, NWE People Lead.

For the first time ever, we organized Rainbow Breakfasts in Spain Region and NWE: at our headquarters in Madrid and London, at our facilities and airport in Barcelona, and at our terminals in Grays and Immingham East and West (United Kingdom). We’ll also have one in Amsterdam very soon.  The objective of this year’s edition was to encourage the people at Exolum to be LGTBIQ+ allies. This means promoting equal rights, reporting discrimination and making our workplaces more inclusive.

To show the company’s support, we prepared this  video in collaboration with several Exolum colleagues. Because we’re all needed to create inclusive, solidary work environments. Don’t miss it and click here!

FEEL GREEN

Bye-bye pampas grass! We joined SEO BirdLife to look after the environment at the port of Bilbao

Do you know what pampas grass is? It’s an invasive plant that causes environmental havoc. We’ve joined forces to eradicate it from our facility in Santurtzi and promote the naturalization of the area.

Don’t let the lovely feather-like shape deceive you: pampas grass  (Cortaderia selloana) is one of the hundred most harmful invasive species on the planet: it destroys native plants, especially in wetlands, and quickly spreading with climate change. At Exolum, we joined SEO BirdLife, the oldest environmental NGO in Spain, and the European project Life Coop Cortaderia ‘Stop Cortaderia’ to control its expansion at our facilities in Santurtzi (Bilbao). This action is part of our commitment after endorsing the transnational strategy to fight Cortaderia selloana in the Atlantic Arc.

The purpose of this collaboration was to eradicate pampas grass and environmentally restore the land at our facilities in Santurtzi. Work was done under this project on nearly four hectares of land on which two slopes that had been invaded by pampas grass were freed up by applying phytosanitary treatments. The instructions set forth in the Best Practices Manual for Pampas Grass Management created as part of the Life Stop Cortaderia Project
were followed at all times.

To increase the capacity to welcome biodiversity, we’ll now naturalize the landscaped areas by creating prairies with flowers, ponds and bushes.

For Javier Alonso, our Global HSSE & Technology Lead, “Preserving natural habitats is one of Exolum’s priorities. That’s why we participated in this project to protect biodiversity in the Santurtzi area and fight the invasive species threatening our ecosystems.”

“Preserving natural habitats is one of Exolum’s priorities”

Felipe González, who is the SEO Birdlife representative responsible for this project, said “Companies have a lot to gain by better understanding the interdependency between business activities, natural capital and biodiversity. Exolum’s work at its port of Bilbao plant is a clear example of how companies can help preserve our biodiversity.”

This collaborative action has made it possible to eliminate a major focal point of this invasive species in the port of Bilbao area.  But it’s also part of our commitment to protecting the environment and natural habitats in the areas where we operate , as outlined in our sustainability strategy established in the ESG Framework Plan.

The invasive plant that is spreading throughout Europe

Native to South America, pampas grass is present in many European countries as an invasive species which is colonizing natural areas of great value and displacing a large variety of European native species. Once it reaches the age of maturity, it grows and occupies space extremely quickly.

The acknowledgement of this problem as concerns preserving our biodiversity has led to the approval of public and private strategies and plans to fight the expansion of this species.

World Environment Day: committed to saving the planet

We joined the United Nations celebration which focused this year on halting desertification under the slogan ‘Our Land. Our Future’. At Exolum, ‘We’re #GenerationRestoration’ too.

For World Environment Day, the UN reminded us that 40% of the world’s population is suffering from the effects of the degradation of the Earth and how it takes 1,000 years to produce just three centimetres of topsoil.

At Exolum, we’re promoting the hashtag ‘We’re #GenerationRestoration’ because we can all be part of the change. Our company is participating in different initiatives we collaborate with to regenerate land and protect the environment.

Among other actions, we’ve completed biodiversity studies around our facilities in Huelva and Albuixech, and for three years we’ve been participating in the Phy2Climate project to clean up land affected by hydrocarbons through phyto-remediation (a technique that uses plants to absorb soil contaminants) and make use of the crops to produce clean biofuels. Moreover, we’re making efforts to minimize its impact on the environment at all of our facilities.

This commitment to the environment has helped us improve our GRESB 2023 rating, which assesses sustainability, as we now have a score of 97 out of 100, five points more than the year before.

Mint to sow our commitment

Our symbolic contribution to this day was coloured green with the fresh aroma of mint. In Spain Region, we gave away a pot with mint seeds and launched a challenge: water it, care for it and send in a photo once grown and looking great. We’ll hold a draw among those who participate with the winner receiving a wine tourism weekend in La Rioja.

We optimize our consumption with the new Energy Management System

The head office in Madrid and the airport facility in Barcelona have an Energy Management System certified according to the 50001 standard. We are making progress in sustainability!

For the past nine months, the Energy Management System has enabled us to optimize our energy consumption and analyze new actions to improve it. At Barcelona airport, we have reduced the diesel we use in our operations thanks to a more detailed analysis of data, including the monitoring of fuel consumption. At our head office in Madrid, we have monitored the energy consumption of our gas boilers and air conditioning systems to better adjust them to the weather, and we have improved the efficiency of our lighting fixtures during corrective maintenance to replace them with LED technology. In our commitment to sustainability, we are starting to reduce our diesel consumption and will act to reduce our electricity consumption as well, thus reducing our carbon footprint. We are committed to the planet!

Energy Group: a forum to be more efficient

At the same time we implemented this system, we created the Energy Group which is a forum for debate and discussion on energy efficiency that meets each quarter to propose and analyse initiatives for improvement. The members include Marta Fernández, COE of HSSE; Antonio Rodríguez Moraleda, Operations Analyst; Montserrat Sans, head of the Barcelona airport facility; Francisco Santamaría, Operations Coordinator for Safety, Energy and the Environment, and Miquel Vilaró, General Services Operations Coordinator.

Volunteers for a more inclusive world

Have you heard of the Skills School? It’s the volunteering plan we’ve developed in Spain along with the Adecco Foundation to help the intellectually disabled gain independence and critical thinking skills.  It’s been a wonderful experience!

Solidarity, diversity and a desire to build a more inclusive world are all very much present at Exolum. That’s why we’ve given a boost to our volunteering plan by starting up the Skills School along with the Adecco Foundation.

This initiative gives Exolum volunteers the chance to prepare one-hour online sessions during which they debate topics of current interest with people who are disabled. It’s a way to help them develop an ability to interpret information and form opinions through reflection.

Javier Alonso, Global HSSE & Technology Lead, was particularly motivated to join this programme: “Having a daughter with an intellectual disability has helped me understand the importance of helping other people with special needs so they can develop to their full potential and live autonomously as adults.”

For Mavi de Lamor, Communication Lead, her inspiration was “the opportunity to make a positive contribution to the community and help other people develop”.

More diversity

Every volunteer has their own reasons for engaging in this programme, but they all mentioned the experience has given them more empathy. They all agree that putting themselves in other people’s shoes is highly valuable for life and work.

For María José Muñiz, head of the Huelva facility, this volunteer programme “gives you the chance to get other perspectives on life and see how positive diversity is”. What’s more, it strengthens Exolum’s image as an organization that’s socially responsible.  “It fosters a sense of price and cohesion among employees,” says Mavi. Another volunteer, Violeta Bowen, Global People Project Developer, thinks participating makes it so “these initiatives can be sustainable and repeated more frequently”. Everyone recommends this experience through which they’ve grown personally and professionally. As Javier says, “You get much more than you give.”

Thank you all for your commitment!

Javier Alonso: the joy of making others happy

“After this experience, I’ll always remember the happiness on the participants’ faces at the end of the session. It was incredible to see how by doing just a small bit we received so much gratitude for simply having shared what we do at Exolum,” says Javier, who believes his communication skills have improved in that they are now “adapted for such a wonderful group of people, those with an intellectual disability”.

María José Muñiz:
an inner rewardr

“By volunteering in this way, you earn an inner “reward” and are able to relate with other diversities. It’s an opportunity to get to know other perspectives in life.  Seeing how there are people who overcome their difficulties to become better and integrate into society makes you realize how we take things for granted, when we really shouldn’t,” she explains.

Mavi de Lamor: giving without expecting anything in return

“Volunteering has given me a broader perspective and has reminded me of the importance of giving without expecting anything in return. I’ve strengthened my belief in social responsibility and in each individual’s ability to make a difference,” says Mavi, who shared a session with María José on how to be cautious when using social media.  “The little things can make a huge impact.”

Violeta Bowen: giving and receiving

Violeta thought she could actively contribute to this project with her knowledge as an organizational psychologist and Project Developer.  “I was certain I’d also get a lot out of it, and I have. I’ve been able to collaborate with my Exolum colleagues with whom I don’t work on a daily basis, learn from it all and have a wonderful time during the talks.” She highlighted the beneficiaries implication and participation.

We’ve renewed our agreement with the Real Madrid Foundation in collaboration with the city of San Fernando de Henares

The San Fernando de Henares social sports school was founded in November 2010 thanks to a collaboration agreement between Exolum, this city hall in the Madrid area and the Real Madrid Foundation, which we recently renewed. Every season, the school serves nearly a hundred minors between the ages of 5 and 17 with at least 50% of the spots earmarked for children and young people at risk of exclusion or socially disadvantaged. The minors receive a half or full grant thanks to our support.

Jorge Guillén, our Managing Director of the Spain Business and Aviation Unit; Emilio Butragueño, Director of Institutional Relations for Real Madrid; Enrique Sánchez, Executive Vice-President of the Real Madrid Foundation; and Javier Corpa, Mayor of San Fernando de Henares, signed the renewed agreement. We’re proud to encourage the values of sport, which are in line with ours!

We sponsored the RAF Benefit Fund Awards

For the third year in a row, we sponsored the annual RAF (United Kingdom Royal Air Force) Benefit Fund award ceremony which was held in London. Our company funded the Squadron of the Year award, which went to the East of Scotland Universities Squadron.

Steve Land, our NWE Lead, gave out the award.  “We hope to continue cooperating with the RAF in the future, not only with our sponsorship, but also through the air bases we service at Exolum,” he said.

We collaborated with the Regional Swimming Championship of Castilla-La Mancha

We helped organize the Regional Swimming Championship of Castilla-La Mancha, held in Puertollano (Ciudad Real), where one of our most strategic storage facilities is located. Around 500 swimmers from 25 clubs participated over the two-day event. The Puertollano Swimming Club, presided over by our colleague Jorge Ruiz, finished in seventh place with 43 medals. The tournament was a complete success thanks to the joint efforts by the Puertollano Swimming Club, the City Hall, Civil Protection, judges, referees and volunteers.  Congratulations!
